Read the account of a "Freedom Summer" volunteer's experiences.
Prompt:
You are a student from Boston who volunteers to help register African Americans in the South to vote. You encounter violent opposition from many. You hear about the murder of three of your fellow volunteers: Michael Schwerner, Andrew Goodman & James Chancey. You wonder if you and your friends will face a similar fate. Why is what you are doing worth risking your life? Will you be successful? What do you think will happen?
I am nervous that my friends and I will have a similar fate. However, I'd rather die for somthing I'm standing for, instead of just being a bystander. It's worth risking my life because if I die for future generations, then they won't have to go through the same difficulties that we have and peace will finally be available. No one can do this job alone. It takes someone with a big heart to save other lives while risking their own. Its important to help African Americans to vote because as this movement is going on, my voice is still more powerful then theirs. If i can side with them and help them, then their voice becomes more powerful too.
I would be panicky and paranoid; I would not want to end up like all my friends, dead before we reached our thirties. But in the long run, I rather die for something I believe in than die against my people. As I join the Black Panthers, I would only think of me joining will help generations to come to have a good future, so they will be able to walk down the streets with their friends, with out watching over their backs at every moment. I would never want anyone else to watch their friend drop in front of them, because their skin was too dark. So yes I want to help educate young children, they should stand up for what they believe in, education is important! I rather I take a beaten for a young kid, because at least I know what I’m getting beat for; the color of my skin is too dark!
Sometimes when I sleep, all I think about is whether I will share a similar fate that my friends had. The task that lies before me is not an easy cake but it is one of the most diffcult challenges because I would be risking my life. Most people would not risk their lives for this kind of a cause because they believe black people should not have the right vote. The last thing I want is to die, but if my death goes to a just cause. Deep down, I know that I am fighting for the right cause because I believe that everyone should have an equal opportunity in our society.
Me and the other volunteers I am working in a very dangerous situation but it is what we all believe is right. We are trying to let Southerns know that African Americans don't register to vote simply because they don't want to. They don’t vote because they cant, because eaither they cant pass a test or didn’t have enough money to pay the crazy poll tax. This is going to be a hard to make this successful but I know I will try everything in my power to get voting rights for blacks.I think that eventually whites will reize that blacks are people too and they deserve voting rights just as much as the rest of us.
After hearing about the deaths of my friends, I fear the consequences of the movement much more. But there will never be enough fear to overcome my determination to equalize America.I know that by risking my life now, I am saving many down the road, and that for me is success. For now, success isn't determined by whether or not we completely achieve equality, because I know that isn't going to happen very soon. Success for me will be staying true to the movement, and persisting even when I know that it will have many negative results to my being.
I really don't know what will ultimatly happen to me but I think that if I just play it safe and Watch where I sleep i should be killed. But this job is worth the risk anyway. It's the principal, i'm in school ill do the rest later.
So the goal is to take this whole thing step by step. The oal of this isn't to cause violence or rebellion. It's just to get blacks registered to vote. The more voting power they have, the more power politically they will have in the South. They need that more than federal power.
Though I am so eager to help with the Movement, at the same time I do fear for my own life. I am apart of the Civil Rights movement because I do care. I am one of the few who seek to change the world in which we live in today. Though violence erupts from all ends of the South, the dead are remembered for their bravery. In the end everything will be a success. There will be a world where a person can vote and not be judged by the color of their skin. I want to help create this future the Movement seeks to create and destroy the segregationist ways that many still turn to. If I am amble to stand guard and take into account all of my surroundings, I believe that I will make it out alive and live to see this future I envision.
"I know that by risking my life now, I am saving many down the road, and that for me is success"-Matthews Life is a definite risk. When fighting for equality; risk increases to the death. Matthews makes a great point here by saying how he helps wih his part of the movement, he is saving anothers life as well. In this situation you can not have a selfish attitude toward anything. Of course you are fighting for your freedom but at the same it is African American people in general that you are risking your life for. If a person is not able to come to terms with this theory; their strenght is not as strong as they believe.
I don't know what will happen to me. I am aware that this is a fight with risks. It would be foolish for me to think otherwise. But without a doubt, my sacrifce today, will save the lives of my people in generations to come. Therefore, this fight is worth the risk, and we will be successful. If I die, if my peers die, will die in honor.
I would be terrified that I may chare the same fate as the other volunteers. However, I believe that what I am doing is worth it. Everyday blacks are getting hurt and lynched and fighting for there right to vote is something i truly belive in. I really don't know if my actions will be sucessful but there will always be a chance they will be. Hopefully, blacks will be allowed to vote in the future.
I agree with Anamike. What I am doing will save many lives. As Spock said, the lives of the many outweigh the lives of the few. The greater good is worth more then my life itself. So if i die, let it be, it will be in honor
I do in fact fear for my life and the lives of my close friends. What we are doing is very risky and I am well aware of what the consequences of my actions might be. I do believe that is it well worth what I may encounter to prevent this from happening in the future. I will do whatever it takes and endure any amount of pain and suffering to end our struggle once and for all.
I worry that my and I will face a similar fate and that fear sometimes gets the best of me and makes me think twice. But when that happens I know what is right and I will stand up for what is just even if it costs my life. I can’t watch people of color suffer for only trying to claim is supposed to be theirs. Now that I have an opportunity to do something about it I will not let that chance go by. I cant stand by and watch these innocent people constantly getting their rights denied from them when they are worthy of them as much as I am. I believe that this movement will be successful and just by being part of it I will be encouraging people to stand up for what they believe is right.
Of course I am scared that this could happen to me. Schwerner, Goodman, and Chancey's views and opinions are no different from my own, so I am at great risk. It is important for everybody to vote in America. Even if I cannot, I will die trying, so that others can have the opportunity. I know that if we keep fighting and refuse to quit, over time, African Americans will have the opportunity to vote. I think that it will take a long time, but whites will come around and America will be integrated. I will continue to fight for this because I know it is right, and I will never give up. -Suzanne
I might face violence in helping people vote but it’s worth it. Everyone deserves the right to vote, white or black. It is defiantly worth risking my life for if your are going to live in an area with rules and regulation telling you what to do but not being able to vote for those rules, then I think that you shouldn’t have to follow those rules. I hope I will be successful and if I am not then my children will be and if their not then their children will be and so on. I hope that eventually everyone will be able to vote without being discriminated against.
I am afraid and do not wish to have a similar fate for my friends. Even though this might happen i am still willing to do it because i know that the cause i am fighting for is worth it. I rather take part in it and help people then be too afraid and just let racial injustices keep happening. I have the chance to help them and that is what i plan to do, because it is what i believe is right. I think i will be successful in fighting for this cause. I think that, eventually, all African Americans will have the right to vote and that no one will be kept from voting because of the color of their skin.
I'm not afraid, because i know i am right. i know that if i die, i am only trying to help these people. though i don't believe anyone deserves that fate, i am not afraid. because what i am fight for is so much bigger then those murderers, so much more than me, this is America and this is bringing her down. and if i die knowing that i was trying to save her, i have done my life's job. i have fulfilled what i came here for. we are winning, and we shall win. the world is changing and people are finally standing up for themselves. allowing the voting is only a mini step to what we will win in the future.
I feel like the freedom summer will succeed. There are to many of us trying to integrate the schools, and trying to register for voting. It is worth doing because the time for segration should finally be over. It has been a tradition for to long and it is not a good tradition. I think that we will succeed and end segragation.
Im very worried aout what might happen, but id rather die for somethign i believe is very important than sit around and be pushed around my whole life. This will also help for future generations to come, i dont want other people to all have to go through what i have gone through.
There is no doubt that I am terrified of doing this. I can't imagine the everyday violence that I am about to face but I know that I can handle it. The risk is definately worth it because I know that what I'm doing will pay off eventually and that it is the right thing to do. Whether or not I am successful does not matter fully, what matters the most is that I make a step in the right direction for others to follow.
I am well aware of the danger when I signed up to be a volunteer. I feel very strongly that my help is needed and that this civil rights work is what I am meant to do with my life. I am terribly against the social injustice and racism against African Americans and I will never stop registering them to vote, even after I was informed of the murder of my friends. I was very sad for a few weeks- but their deaths made me realize why I am a part of Freedom Summer. I will avenge my friends and never give up, for I know that is what they would have wanted. I am afraid, I will admit, but that is not going to stop me. Risking my life is worth it because I am giving a voice to those who have been muted by society unfairly and evilly. Maybe by giving African Americans a voice, I am giving myself one as well.
I agree with moc121991 in a sense, but I feel a great amount of pressure to achieve Freedom Summer’s goals. I feel that if I fail, then I am letting down my fellow volunteers, and the African American race. I think that being successful is of the highest importance and I do not want to die in vain.
I totally agree with Olivia, She is so right. The importance of our future generations outweights any other reason to be fighting for our rights. I want my kids to be free and I think sthats the biggest motivator anyone could have.
